On Wednesday, March 5, 2025, the National Commission of Banks and Insurance (CNBS), in collaboration with UN Women, held the workshop “Women’s Empowerment: A Path to Equality” held within the framework of International Women’s Day, which was attended by all female staff of the CNBS. The event aimed to explore the historical background that gave rise to this commemoration, highlighting the ongoing struggle for gender equality and women’s rights.

Through two days, given by Engineer Herminia Palacios, National Coordinator of the Women’s Economic Empowerment Program, and Dr. Amparo Canales, Senior Advisor on Financial Inclusion, of that Organization, the officials and employees of the CNBS delved into the history of the women’s struggle and analyzed various indicators on the financial inclusion of the female population at the national and international level. as well as the evolution of their economic and social situation, also sharing reflections and experiences that further enriched the occasion.

Among the most outstanding points was noted that, in 2024, women represented 53.4% of the country’s population (INE, EPHPM June 2024), which underscores their ability to contribute significantly in various sectors of society, from the economy and politics to education and culture, promoting development and innovation in each of these areas.

Likewise, heads of household headed by women have experienced a notable increase, going from 21% in 1988 to 31% in 2010, and reaching 39% in 2024, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE). This increase, seen from the perspective of equality and empowerment, suggests greater leadership and autonomy of women in the family environment, which contributes to the construction of a fairer society.
On the other hand, the fundamental role of the CNBS was highlighted, which, since 2019, has published the Gender Gap Report in the Financial System, providing relevant financial data and indicators, as well as the country’s evolution in terms of gender gap.
These conferences, which are part of the initiatives of the CNBS, reaffirm its commitment to the promotion of gender equality and female empowerment, strengthening their human talent and promoting financial inclusion to contribute to the country’s comprehensive development.
